Trinity Lutheran Church History
The decision to organize a Lutheran congregation by several German families living in the
Sturgis area was made in 1862 and on December 6, 1863 the Reverend H.C.E. Evers arrived in
Sturgis and was installed as Trinity’s first pastor on January 3, 1864. The constitution was
adopted and signed January 14, 1864. At the end of its first 5 years of organization Trinity
congregation numbered 19 families. In 1869 Reverend G.S. Henkel replaced the Reverend Evers
as Trinity Shepherd to the flock. Pastor Henkel’s health began to fail and in August 1877,
the Synod assigned Candidate H. Gose to Sturgis where he was installed in September of that year,
and served until September of 1885.
The Reverend G. Wolter served the congregation from 1900 until 1902 and on February 3, 1903 Reverend William T. Schalm was installed. His pastorate continued until November 7, 1948 when the Reverend Herbert M. Heidenreich was installed. On March 22, 1952 the main church building of our present facility at 400 South Lakeview was dedicated, and an addition, our education facility, was completed and dedicated on December 8, 1963. Pastor Heidenreich retired in 1974 and the Reverend Erwin A. Rulig served Trinity from September 8, 1974 until April of 1989. In September 1978 Trinity’s pre-school program was initiated and on September 4, 1979 our Christian Day School for pre-kindergarten through fourth grade opened. By 1989 we were able to serve students through the eighth grade. The Reverend Barry Sommerfield was installed April 29, 1990 and remained Trinity’s pastor for the next five years. Our present associate pastor, Reverend Calvin J. Kolzow Jr. was installed January 12, 1992. Reverend Robert P. Hoener served as Trinity's administrative pastor from December of 1995 to October of 1998. Reverend Michael Klafehn is the current administrative pastor. He was installed at Trintity on November 21, 1999. |
